Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi today urged all Muslims to not drag the issue of ‘Triple Talaq’ into political boundaries. PM Modi addressed a gathering in New Delhi as a memorial of the birth anniversary of Basava, a social reformer. He vented his opinion and feelings on the nuances of ‘Triple Talaq’.
PM Modi addressed a gathering in which he expressed his desire to end the matter of ‘Triple Talaq’ which has gripped the entire muslim community across the globe. He urged muslims to “protect women from the aftermath of Triple Talaq – oral divorce by spelling “talaq” thrice.
“A leader will emerge from the muslim community to transform the way muslim women are being treated. He will soon put an end to this,” PM Modi expressed his strong belief. He also urged muslim community to deal with this matter with an open mind and not drag it into politicking measures.
The Centre has argued that triple talaq is anti women’s rights. The All India Muslim Personal Law Board’s (AIMPLB) recently sent out the message that divorce practice is not allowed “without valid reasons”.
“Those who give triple talaq without reasons prescribed by the Sharia (religious law) will face social boycott,” said the AIMLPB earlier this month.
The Supreme Court is currently hearing a case on the Triple Talaq and it is toying with the idea of banning Triple Talaq in India, as a strong measure to provide relief to muslim women who get trapped in the clutches of this exercise.
A five-judge constitution bench will give it’s verdict on the constitutional validity of the practice of triple talaq. The bench is slated to meet starting May 11. The meetings will be held till May 19, date on which a final word on triple talaq validity can be expected.
