Shopian Encounter Highlights:
Indian Army’s cordon and search operation launched in Zaipora village of Shopian district resulted in the deaths of a sepoy and an army major in Kashmir. The army was acting on a tip off about militants taking refuge in Zaipora, in the southern part of Kashmir.
Terror organization Hizb-ul-Mujahideen claimed the responsibility of the Shopian incident. Upon spotting the armed personnel, the militants had opened fire on the search cordon. The encounter injured three army personnel, including Sepoy Kripal Singh, Sepoy Tanzin, and Major Kamlesh Pandey. The soldiers were airlifted to the 92-base hospital in Badami Bagh cantonment.
Combined forces, consisting of CRPF, army and Kulgam police, recovered 3 weapons from the militant camps. These weapons were seized from a police camp last year. Meanwhile, the security forces in Gopalpora village killed two militants in an encounter. They recovered two weapons from dead terrorists. The police identified one of them as Aqib Ahmad Itoo. One of these terrorists was said to attack a bank cash van on May 1 this year.
On Tuesday, the armed forces killed Abu Dujana (26). Dujana is suspected to be the commander of Lashkar-e-Taiba. Lashkar-e-Taiba is a Pakistani group that attacked South Kashmir. Dujana’s local assistant, Arif Ahmad Dar (17) was killed along with him. Dujana had a bounty of Rs 15 lakh on his head. A couple of years back, Dujana sneaked into the Kashmir valley to terrorize the victims.
After the death of Abu Qasim in 2015, Dujana was promoted to the top Lashkar commander. Just recently, the army put his name on the list of ‘top most-active militant commanders in South Kashmir.’
Dujana’s associate Dar was the native of Lelhar village. He joined the militant group, a year ago. His body was buried in Lelhar, whereas Dujana’s body was held by the police.
This accomplishment, unfortunately, came at a cost. Tanzin and Major Pandey succumbed to their injuries later. The army is yet to confirm their casualties.
Kashmir witnessed a sudden surge in violence in last two years. However, the police and the army successfully foiled terror attacks by killing 150 militants in 2016 and 109 militants this year.
