United India Insurance Company is going to provide insurance claims worth INR 277 Crores to over 2 Lakhs famers in 6 districts of Rajasthan. These claims are to be provided under the Prime Ministers Crop Insurance Scheme in 20 blocks of the states. While addressing the media, State Agriculture Minister Prabhu Lal Saini revealed that the amount will be transferred to the farmers shortly.
The minister said that these are contested claims as the insurance company had earlier raised objections on the assessment of crop yield by the revenue board which was later cleared out at a meeting with technical committee of the centre.
These are the pending claims for the 2016 Kharif season that amounts to INR 276.95 Crores. The amount will be disbursed in the next 4 days by the insurance firm and will benefit 2,12,362 farmers belonging to 6 districts of Rajasthan namely Sriganganagar, Sirohi, Jalore, Churu, Udaipur, and Hanumangarh.
Loan Waive Policy
While talking about the farmers’ loan waiving policy, he said that the high power committee is studying various models and would soon come out with a model based on the study. An official announcement will be made shortly. Besides, the state will send a proposal to the centre to direct the insurance company to pay interest on the amount that was delayed for the payment.
The loans taken by 14 Lakh farmers in the cooperative sector amount to INR 15,000 Crores and in addition, there were loans taken by farmers from the public sector banks. The government considered all cases where farmers had already paid back their loans.
Delay in the settlement of Claims
While addressing the media, Mr. Prabhu Saini said that the United India Insurance Company submitted a memorandum to the agriculture commissioner whereby it questioned the figures of harvested crops provided by the state revenue board for Kharif season in the year 2016. However, the commissioner contradicted the objection and asked the company to clear the claims.
Decision taken by Ministry
After this, the company approached the Joint Secretary of the Union agriculture ministry and a meeting was held with the technical advisory committee on December 8, attended by the insurance company officials.
Followed by the discussions, it was decided that the company will immediately settle the insurance claims worth INR 223.74 Lakhs to farmers in Bhadra, Rawatsar, Sanchor, Suratgarh, Gharsana, Raisingh Nagar, Taranagar, Pilibanga, Nohar blocks of Hanumangarh, Sriganganagar, Jalore, and Churu districts of the state.
Number of Beneficiaries under Prime Ministers Crop Insurance Scheme
During the congress-led government ruling between 2008 and 2013, the total number of beneficiaries under the scheme was 1.32 Crores and a total premium worth INR2624.60 Crores was paid while the insurance claim amounted to INR 1855.53 Crores.
Comparing this with the last four years as BJP took over the governance in 2013, the total number of beneficiaries increased to 2.32 Crores. As far as the premium is concerned, INR 5580.71 Crores have been paid and insurance claim worth INR 5273.53 Crores was claimed.
