Under the free pilgrim scheme of Rajasthan government, a new lot of 80 people are leaving again for pilgrimage. 40 people will leave for Jagannathpuri on 10 February and another 40 will leave for Rameswaram on 12 February.
What is the scheme?
In order to make senior citizens to visit popular pilgrims, government of Rajasthan has started a scheme for senior citizens. The scheme is named Deendayal Upadhyay Varishtha Nagrik Tirthyatra Yojana. Under this scheme, the pilgrimage of senior citizens by train and air will be sponsored by state government. Not only air fare but also their food and stay are taken care of by Rajasthan state. Chief Minister of Rajasthan Smt. Vasundhara Raje launched this scheme during 2013-14 budget. Rajasthan has become first state to launch such kind of scheme for senior citizens.
Who manage this pilgrimage?
This pilgrimage yatra is managed and controlled by Devasthan department. The Devasthan department takes care of religious and charitable institutions and temples. In order to the smooth implementation of the scheme, an agreement is signed with Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC).

The state aims to send 1000 senior citizen pilgrims for this yatra. If the number of applications is more, the pilgrims will be selected through a lottery. Under this scheme for senior citizens, other local expenses will be borne by the government.
Undoubtedly, Rajasthan government has already introduced a lot of schemes for the welfare of the citizens. This scheme is altogether a great initiative for senior citizens who cannot afford pilgrimages.
Mr. Vijay Mishra of Devasthan Department informed that senior citizens are required to reach Jaipur airport on time. The pilgrims have to bear the expenses to reach Jaipur themselves.
