Birla Institute of Technology & Science Pilani has found in a recent study that the farmers in Rajasthan have immensely benefitted from the solar pump system. The study has also found a significant decline in the consumption of fuel in the agriculture sector.

Scientist Krishna M. led the study as the principal investigator of a project funded by the Indian Council of Social Science Research. The ICSSR wanted to address some distinct aspects of renewable and non-renewable energy sources at micro and macro levels.

Rajasthan has the nature with maximum solar insolation in the country with an estimated potential of 142GW solar capacity. Rajasthan has abundant barren land suitable for installation of solar power plants.

Raje government’s schemes and policies to support solar pump connections

Rajasthan government has launched ‘Solar Pump Krishi Connection Yojana’ to back the farmers for solar pump installation. Under the scheme, the government bears 60% of expenditure while the farmer has to pay just 40%. Besides, the share of the beneficiary can be recovered within four years.

In addition to that, Raje government has issued ‘Rajasthan Solar Energy Policy-2014’ in October 2014, with the vision of solar capacity addition of 25,000 MW in the state. The policy provides a conductive framework to the new policy will enable rapid scaling up in the establishment of Solar Power plants in the state.

Thereafter, the Raje government has supplemented this with the investment-friendly policy framework for the speedy development of solar Energy sector.

Blithe improvement in the sustainable energy usage

Back then, farmers used to operate diesel generators for 6 to 7 hours a day, consuming two liters of diesel per hour. The use of SPV pumps has resulted in a drastic reduction of fuel consumption. Hence the farmers can irrigate the land during daytime with the SPV pump system.
