Rajasthan’s erstwhile Muslim Riyasat has become the hot seat in the assembly elections. All eyes are on Tonk where Congress Rajasthan chief Sachin Pilot and BJP’s Yunus Khan are engaged in an electoral battle. Meanwhile, the people of Tonk are gainsaying Congress president Sachin Pilot.

On Monday, anti-Congress slogans were heard in Tonk. They were literally chanting “Sachin Pilot wapis Jaao!” and “Congress party Murdabaad!”.

While Pilot was not keen to contest Assembly elections, conflict within his party created a situation wherein he was pushed to fight it out and the seat he chose was Tonk. Pilot has termed the poll as a referendum on Raje government and his fighting election as a fight of the people.

Yunus Khan vs Sachin Pilot in Tonk

The constituency has an ample number of Muslim and Gurjar votes. Citing that, Sachin Pilot chose the seat but conversely, on the very next day he had to face the counter.

Yunus Khan, however, has set the tenor of the contest by terming it as one between ‘Swami and Sevak’ (owner and servant). He thereby termed Pilot, the state Congress chief, as the owner, one who can decide which seat he wants. Whereas, he termed himself as Sevak, one who is contesting on party orders.

Tonk is a constituency dominated by minority voters including Muslims, Scheduled Castes and Gurjars. Interestingly in the last six elections, the BJP has won the seat four times. In 2013, the BJP won by a margin of over 30,000 votes. Isn’t it getting hard for State PCC chief to grab some vote?
