The Rajasathan Budget presented by Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje was found to be inspired and influenced by Akshay Kumar starrer PadMan. The film which has broken all stereotypes by spreading out the message of menstrual hygiene is being appreciated not just in India but across the world as well. The films’ impact was recently seen in the Rajasthan budget announcement when CM Raje announced the Menstrual Hygiene scheme for the rural women of the state.

While revealing the policies and schemes for women and child welfare, the Chief Minister mentioned the launch of Menstrual Hygiene Scheme. This scheme is meant for women and girls residing in the rural areas of Rajasthan between the age of 15 to 45. Under the scheme there will be stakeholder sanitization as well as distribution of free sanitary pads amongst the girls.

The policy will be carried out at the initial cost of INR 76 Crores. All the schools, colleges, Anganwadi centres, health centres, and Annapurna centres will be utilized for the distribution of sanitary pads for the young girls and women. It’s a great initiative on the behalf of the government to cater to the menstrual hygiene needs of females, especially those who are living in rural areas and cannot afford to buy sanitary pads.

Not only this will help the girls and women to get access to pads but at the same time it will also help the society to open up and discuss such crucial issues which are otherwise neglected out of hesitation.

Furthermore, the government has also made provision for the women employees by offering them child care leaves for a maximum of 2 years throughout their tenure. All the women employees, having kids below the age of 18, will now be entitled to child care leaves to take care of their children.

PadMan is a film that is based on the real life story of Arunachalam Muruganatham, a man who changed the life of several women just by the idea of making low cost sanitary pads. Right from the point when the film’s promotion gained pace, discussions have been started and the attitude towards menstruation is changing altogether. And having the idea reflected in the annual budget of a state is definitely a positive change that we all must embrace.
