    It is 17th Statehood day for Jharkhand today. In year 2000, Jharkhand state was made out of Southern Bihar. To pay tribute to the tribal leader Birsa Munda, the state of Jharkhand celebrates its foundation day on the occasion of his birth anniversary. Birsa Munda was a significant person who fought for the independence of India.

    Who is Birsa Munda?

    Birsa Munda was born on November 15, 1875 in Ulihatu region of Jharkhand. Also known as Bhagwan Birsa, Birsa Munda had a major role in fighting for India during British rule. He fought for tribal people against the exploitative policies of British government.

    He was part of Munda tribe in Chhotanagpur. Birsa Munda had to travel a lot during his childhood with his parents. Under the guidance of teacher Jaipal Nag, he had taken his studies and later converted to Christianity in order to join the German Mission school.

    During the time of independence movement of India, British government acquired the forests and lands which are natural habitats of triblas. Birsa Munda fought for the tribals’ rights against the British rule. Birsa had a big role in uprooting superstition, stopping animal sacrifice and avoiding alcoholism too.

    He was arrested by police and had lost his life in prison at a very young age of 25.

    Celebration on Jharkhand Foundation Day

    This day holds an important place for people of Jharkhand as tribal people of the region had got the statehood after efforts of several years. The students also marched a rally in the morning on the occasion of Birsa Munda Jayanti.

    In fact, the President of India Ram Nath Kovind is Ranchi on the occasion of Jharkhand Foundation Day. President will launch, inaugurate and deliver various welfare schemes today. President also paid tribute to this freedom fighter Birsa Munda through his tweet. He tweeted,
